FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Chairman’s
Message

Brendon ButtsChairman

The Trinidad and Tobago National Commission for UNESCO has an important responsibility: to make UNESCO’s work meaningful, visible and accessible to the people of our country.

For me, that means going beyond representation. It means creating stronger connections between UNESCO’s global priorities and the realities, needs and possibilities within our schools, communities, institutions and national development agenda.

Brendon Butts is an educator, education architect and technology-in-education specialist with more than two decades of experience in educational leadership, curriculum innovation, teacher development and the integration of technology into teaching and learning.

He holds a Master’s degree in Educational Studies from the University of Sheffield, with a specialisation in Educational Technology, and has worked across school leadership, professional development and education innovation in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.

As Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago National Commission for UNESCO, Brendon is focused on strengthening the Commission as an active platform for national development, partnership and meaningful engagement with UNESCO’s global priorities. He also leads the Commission’s Education Sector, with particular interests in quality education, teacher capacity, computational thinking, artificial intelligence and education, digital inclusion, learner agency and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4.

Brendon is the Founder and Managing Director of Education Solution Specialists Ltd., where his work centres on designing and implementing education solutions that expand access to high-quality STEAM learning and build the capacity of educators and young people across the Caribbean.

His approach to education is grounded in a simple principle: technology should strengthen—not diminish—the human dimensions of learning. He advocates for education systems that develop critical thinking, creativity, ethical judgement and the agency learners need to participate meaningfully in an increasingly algorithmic world.
